Retirement US cities favoring culture over pure COL/convenience

I find that most lists for retirement look at convenience of life and costs of living (fair enough), but I'm wondering what are the top US cities for culture and arts - music, theater, exhibitions etc.

We currently live in NYC, where we're admittedly extremely spoiled. I am considering hustling longer to afford retiring here, or at least spending the first few years here, but also curious what other cities can attract prime cultural patrons and artists on a regular basis. Because we have a decent NW, I can afford a city that isn't the cheapest.

As a European it would ideally be more than just local culture, eg Nashville feels vibrant but very centered on country music (I could be wrong, this was my impression there).

I'm open to suggestions of cities close enough to major cultural hubs. submitted by /u/shannister
